Whilst LAX is only 15 miles from the city, heavy traffic can mean that taxis are expensive (C. $45) and can take a lot longer than the normal 30 minutes. Public transport connections to the airport are weak however with no direct rail link and a handful of bus routes.
The best of the bunch is the LAX flyaway shuttle which operates between the central Union station and airport terminals every 30 minutes. Renting a car is a viable option, and will be useful for negotiating the spread out sights of the city.
